The New Reclosable Screw-Top Aluminum Bottle For Your Beer

In today’s consumer products marketplace, brands are constantly searching new ways to revitalize their image and stand out on the shelf. Beverage industry has taken the beverage packaging to a whole new level with a full range of aluminum bottles.

Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (ABI) was the first brewer to launch a reclosable screw-top aluminum bottle for their beverage, the Bud Light Platinum. They hand-picked Bud Light Platinum as “Platinum has been able to elevate the premium light beer category with its blend of image and flavor, and we believe it will do the same to for the perception of aluminum bottles”, said Rob McCarthy, vice president of Bud Light.

Using an impact-extruded packaging technology, the aluminum packaging is environmentally friendly, being 100% recyclable. Seamless aluminum finish also adds to premium allure. Consumers think the bottle is “more premium, more refreshing,” Paul Chibe, vice president U.S. marketing for AB InBev.

Features such as chill-retention, re-sealability, and durability are some of the reasons why there is a growing number of beverage marketers looking for the “cool factor” in order to make a lasting impression on potential customers. The design of the Bud Light Platinum aluminum bottle – which features a twist-off cap – provides for a tool-less opening. The new bottle is also more than 50% stronger than a standard aluminum can and helps the beer get colder faster. “The new reclosable bottle continues our long tradition of innovative packaging that delivers the freshest, coldest, best-tasting beer possible,” said Pat McGauley, vice president of innovation for Anheuser-Busch.

The new bottle uses less aluminum than traditional cans, said Luiz Edmond, the brewer’s North American president, and the packaging invites drinkers to play with the screw-top, which male drinkers like, he said, with a discreet flag saying “trbeer1ust me, I like it” on the bottle neck.

AB InBev’s initiative to introduce the new aluminum packaging for a more expensive and stronger variant of beer was part of a strategic plan to bring Budweiser and Bud Light back to life. The brand has about 21 percent of the U.S. beer market, with its next closest competitor Coors Light accounting for about 8 percent. AB InBev competes with SABMiller Plc (SAB) and Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s joint venture MillerCoors in the U.S, according to Bloomberg.

Today’s beauty business appeals for metals to packaging components to make the most impact. To add a look of luxury and an opportunity to communicate brand identity, most beauty companies use metal components of aluminum used as shells, caps, collars, ferrules and other decorative accents. Aerosol cans, bottles, jars and tins can also resort to aluminum as a strong, resilient material.

The most attractive and powerful packages use today what it is called anodized aluminum. Anodized aluminum is an aluminum sheet exposed to an electrolytic passivation process that imparts a tough, hard-wearing protective finish on its surface. During anodizing, the surface of the metal is converted to its oxide. The oxide layers are receptive to any color dye and are extremely wear, corrosion and heat resistant, FDA approved, won’t peel or delaminate. This process gives a metallic look to the package. “Anodizing is a treatment of the surface, which gets very hard and can be colored in almost any imaginable color—matte or shiny. The color is inside the anodizing layer, thus can never wear off. And it still keeps the metallic look in all colors,” said Boris Schafer, director of Seidel’s customer relations in New York.

“The advantage of aluminum is the fact that it can be anodized,” said Schafer. Aluminum cannot be plated, but can be anodized or lacquered to achieve different colors and finishes, which is an advantage over plastic.  “A wide variety of finishes can be applied to anodized aluminum”, according to Aviva Himoff, president of Préface Deux.

The men’s line fragrance “Kenneth Cole Black” launched by Kenneth Cole is a good example of the simple shapes that are now popular, noted Eric Bigotte, executive vice president at Axilone USA. The cap uses anodized aluminum, giving a shiny, deep black finish to perfectly match the black glass bottle of the new men’s fragrance. To provide the lightweight aluminum with a more substantial feel, the cap, which includes a PP insert, was assembled with a weight. Black is available in 50-ml and 100-ml sizes, but the cap was produced in only one size and two different sized inserts provide a snug fit on each bottle.

Aluminum Industry Analysis in Brazil

Growing demand for aluminum in Brazil is powered by the packaging, transportation and construction industries. Aluminum foil is used in flexible packaging and many consumer products are making the transition in packaging material, leading to greater demand across the world.  Increases in demand for transportation and construction needs are powered by the 2014 World Cup and the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where extrusion-related programs include stadiums and airports. The Brazilian Aluminum Association (ABAL) technical director Arton Filletti says “We also see great potential for extrusions in other modes of people transport, such as railways, urban surface trains and subways.” He also sees potential in the shipping and offshore industry.

Aluminum is on the rise in the auto industry and has plenty of room for growth in Brazil. In 2013, vehicles produced domestically have average aluminum content per vehicle at around 110 pounds. In leading markets such as the U.S. and Europe, average aluminum content per vehicle exceeds 300 pounds.
